Thunder came unexpectedly in the night. Rain beat the bedroom window.

This morning frantic clouds tore across the sky, bright-edged but dense at the heart. Cool air from the kitchen window spilled pools through the apartment. Scurf of pale leaves clattered along gutters. Traffic churned the maelstrom like a vision of a caravan in desert dust. Wind howled over the roof and around corners, a sound like a mighty rope drawn. Trees waved limbs in mad denial, leaves shining and damp, grasping last warm rays of sun.

At the gym, the radio said tens of thousands of Ontarians were without hydro this morning, fallen branches to blame. Crews were working to restore service.

The gym was strangely quiet. It's been that way all month. At lunch hour, there's no one vying for possession of the weights. The club has started staying open 24 hours. Does everyone exercise at midnight? After a hiatus, abs and calves raise the most fuss getting back into shape. But after seven workouts in less than three weeks, I'm finding the groove. In the wall of mirrors, my shoulders reveal lines of definition reappearing.

The skin bears a golden remembrance of summer. Soon it will vanish.

a gym open 24hrs? that's weird. more flexibility with scheduling. sure. but i'm like you. midnight? then again, I suppose if someone is working graveyard shift, midnight to them is more like 6-7pm to the rest of us.

Yeah, and with the place so quiet during the day, I can't see how they could afford to stay open all night. It's not as if Guelph is a big factory town with a big population of shift workers. Who knows, maybe it's busy at night for some other reason. Maybe I'll go sit in the sauna some evening, just to see. ;-)

That weather system came through here at about 3:00 PM yesterday. The aftermath is distinctly autumnal.

It was moving pretty fast. Then again, I suppose it might not have been the same front, but it behaved pretty similarly.

We have one 24-hour gym here in London, too. It's full of students and night-workers at late hours. I checked it out because it's the closest one to work.

My gym is full of students, too, maybe that's why. It still surprises me they would use it enough through the night to justify keeping the place open.

Hope you're feeling better soon.
