Floats (North Head, Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick)

Scarves (Quebec City)

When Sylvie and Sarah saw my trip photos last night, Sylvie picked out these two as ones she would like to paint. Many interesting photos from the trip still have never been posted. She also thought these would make interesting puzzles. Nudge nudge, hint hint?

The first was taken the morning we left Grand Manan Island. All over the Maritimes we saw collections of floats like these hanging on walls of houses. The scarves were displayed on the door of a boutique in Old Quebec.

If today was any indication, we're going to have a long, fine fall. October 1st was one of the most pleasant days of the whole summer. Summer!

I met Bob, Sylvie and Sarah at the farmers market this morning, then we all went over to Bob's and spent the afternoon struggling to install two heavy steel brackets to support an air conditioner on the back wall of his condo. The hard part was drilling holes into concrete for four bolts. We burnt out Brenda's half-inch drill, so Bob had to go rent another one. I feel all butch like a lesbian. It was a day well-spent with my friends and I came home feeling tired in a good way.

I brought home two big bunches of fresh basil from the market. This evening was spent making two big batches of pesto for the freezer. In one I substitued tahini for roasted pine nuts and sesame oil for some of the olive oil. I like the taste, but the consistency is not as good.

I love the photo of the lobster buoys. A lot of them float ashore on my family's island in Maine. The screened sleeping porch in the cabin has a rope threaded along the ceiling from which hang a number of older, wooden buoys. The click and clack pleasingly in light wind.

I wasn't sure whether these displays were meant to indicate a fisherman's home or merely collections people had gathered from the beach. Your comment suggests the latter, but I suppose it could be a combination.

I agree -- I would love to do those puzzles. I wonder how one goes about selling a great puzzle picture to a good puzzle company like Ceaco or Springbok.

Check out [livejournal.com profile] susandennis's puzzle page. If you browse through, you'll find a few of my photos she has used to make puzzles, which you can do on your computer. That's what my nudging and hinting was about. :-)

Sylvie is righter than she knows! I had snagged both pictures for my puzzle folder even before I read the text! Cracked me up. And yes, they are PERFECT for puzzles. Thank you!

Ha, there must be an interesting metaphor there.

We saw displays like this all over the Maritimes, usually on one wall of a shanty. I couldn't figure out whether they were indiciations of a fisherman's pride, or beachcombers' collections.

My understanding is that every fishing family has its own float to distinguish one from the other.

So these collections are probably just for show or fun. This was one of the largest we saw, on a specially built display rack beside the driveway.

[livejournal.com profile] susandennis has picked them up, so I expect they'll appear on her puzzle page later.

Why should the lesbians have all the tool using fun?

And to more completely answer a question you asked over in my journal: pesto freezes just dandy, although if it's exposed to air, it darkens. (not a safety issue at all, mainly appearance) I've got some a year old that still tastes fine.

Oh yes, I learned about pesto last summer. I still have one or two servings left in the freezer from last September, but it was time to make some more while fresh basil was still to be had. I just love pesto, but this is the only time of year I can afford to buy basil in decent quantities.
