The Rainbow Chorus performed this afternoon at the grandest same-sex wedding I've attended yet. It was a formal, all-black affair and the ministers were obviously proud to perform this ceremony in their church. I'm not a proponent of marriage, yet felt moved by the way Jim and Alan expressed their commitment.

Marian sat with Jon's boyfriend, Bill. Later she mentioned that out of three weddings she has attended in her life, two were same-sex.

"I feel privileged," she said.

I gave us both haircuts this morning in preparation. Hers is buzzed short as mine, using a number one guard. I'll try for pictures tomorrow.

Dinner at home was one of Marian's favourites: shrimp scampi with jasmine rice. Afterwards we made chocolate chip cookie squares for her to take back to school.

Tonight I finished Pattern Recognition. At the point when the main character achieved the object of her quest, I set the book down for a moment in awe of its beauty. The protagonist is unusually vulnerable and innocent; her story and discovery have a rare quality of tenderness. After that gentle climax, the denouement seemed pretentious and out of control, but I still liked the book more than Neuromancer.
