Sylvie, Marian, Sarah, Brenna and me

Our collaborative art thingie

As New Year's Eves go, it was one of the best, beating several I've spent cruising loud, crowded bars alone. Brenna commented recently about commercialism stretching from one holiday to another; I replied that what matters is spending time with people we care about. And that's what we did.

Finger food allowed us to keep the kitchen table clear for our art project. We incorporated yarn, cloth, coloured pencil, felt marker and handmade paper to fill this large paper now hanging in my living room.

Next we bundled over to Sylvie and Sarah's apartment for the second stage of creativity. Sylvie had made sugar cookies, which we decorated with coloured icing and sprinkles.

I took a bottle of champagne, something I've never cared for, but it seemed the right thing for a sip at midnight, toasting 2006 and friendship. Spumante Bambino is actually quite good. It was Brenna's first taste of alcohol.

My daughters and I rode home through freezing rain a few minutes after midnight and watched Fried Green Tomatoes.

Today will involve cleanup and roasting a small turkey. I haven't done one yet this season, and having leftovers in the freezer for a casserole or two is mandatory.

Those bunnies are Brenna's slippers. Their names are Wallace and Gromit. :-)

Yes, those are Sarah's glasses, which I made her take off because they were reflecting the flash. It was good fun all around.

I love your "art thingie" -- doing that sort of art with several people is so much fun -- I've only ever done it with my grandchildren, but I'm going to suggest it to my Collage Group -- wouldn't that be great fun to do on our retreat? Yes! thanks for the idea!

That's a terrific idea. It was interesting to see cross-pollination between our work.

That's such an awesome idea, even for after-dinner entertainment. How many folks sit around after dinner and just watch television or some such? I'll have to do this sometime.

Sarah has often broken out pencils or pens when visiting with the girls, and that was what gave me the idea of all of us doing something together. None of us except Brenna cares much for watching TV. I heartily recommend this as an alternative.

Happy New Year, Van. Did you do the upper right hand corner?

Yes, the quilt/brick thing constructed from handmade paper rectangles is mine, and the moon/humpty face. So is the fuzzy knitted swatch with squiggly legs pasted near the middle left edge; unfortunately its bright colours don't show very well here.

Happy New Year, Lisa.

Egads...you are SO handsome in that pic.

I *love* Fried Green Tomatoes...it has a connection, in some way, to the town I grew up in, but I can't remember what.

I thought I had seen it and loved it, so I bought the DVD. Turns out I had never seen it, but loved it anyway. So that's something to watch in a tight coil with you someday.

I've been thinking over 2005, and your visit here was one of the most memorable experiences, second only to the East Coast trip. I've been looking at photos and imagining.

is that a tree growing on a banane volant?

A blue banana with silver trim. Marian says she thinks it's just tabogganing.

I may well be missing subtext again, but...

Is the tobogganing tree holding the black mop-thing's apple? or is it an apple tree?

It is an apple. I commented that it looked like it had just taken the apple from someone (thinking Eve), whereupon Brenna added the mop-thing.

Did Brenna say what MopThing actually is? (if it isn't a mop)

It's a black yarn pompom named Squid.

As far as the communal artwork goes, I quite like the psychedelic snail wearing a bowtie.

It's indeed a fine looking snail, Sylvie's work.

Creativity is openness, innovation, discovery, curiosity, an inclination toward beauty. I can't think of any better way to love.

Van
