Allan Gardens: Amaryllis

Allan Gardens: Kalanchoes and barrel cacti

It was clear and mild for early January. I had the afternoon to spend in Toronto, starting at Allan Gardens. It usually has a nice Christmas display, and the same flowers were still evident: poinsettias, amaryllis and, in the desert room, clouds of brilliant kalanchoes surrounding barrel cacti. The sempervivum wreaths were attractive. The central greenhouse is tropically humid, housing palms, a dome of calm amidst downtown. Several homeless people usually keep warm inside the entrance, but never bother other visitors. Today a woman sat painting with watercolours.

Then I wanted to write, but the usual tables at Timothy’s and Starbucks were filled. I ended up paying $2.50 for a spiced tea at Lettieri. It wasn’t worth it, but folk at adjoining tables, engaged in animated gossip, created warm atmosphere.

Later at the Eagle I encountered a long-time acquaintance who bought me a second pint of Alexander Keith’s. Eventually he offered a joint, I had a single toke, and ended up completely lit. Finding my way home on the TTC was a chore, but I subsequently managed to make spaghetti for the boys without poisoning anyone. That’s why I don’t smoke up often, still a day of decadence was needed.

It really is a miracle I figured out which groceries to buy. My, what an afternoon.

Gorgeous pictures, so inspiring. Meanwhile I haven't even figured out how to make an icon for myself. Slowly slowly.

If you have something you want cropped and sized, I would be happy to do it. You could email me the raw image. Or I might be able to give you directions. What software do you have for working with images?

Thanks, that's very kind. I'll be okay, just slow -- waiting for my husband to have time to help me. He's the computer guy. I'm not good at it and slow to learn and remember. I can't even tell you the name of the program I can play with if I dare, but also have software that came with the camera, not yet installed. I figure if I learn one thing a day, eventually I'll know what I'm doing.

I'll have to show you sometime. Actually I'm probably more fun when I've had two or three drinks, which relieves my shyness. Pot tends to make me withdraw even further into myself. It's pleasant enough for me, but I doubt whether it makes me better company (just find me a space on a dance floor). On the other hand it makes me more tactile.

Tactile is good. It's alcohol that makes me more tactile, if that were possible.

And your shyness around me hasn't been an issue...nor mine around you, I hope. :)

We really should think about going dancing next time I'm up there, too. :)

No I'm not shy around you, although a little alcohol can make me less inhibited and slightly aggressive (not in a bad way, I think) even around people I know well. Really, it makes me a little more outgoing.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing about going dancing just now.

*grin* Yes. A few drinks for each of us, and a night dancing.

We have a date. :)

I'll be looking forward to that!

Is Allan Gardens the greenhouse just near the gay village in Toronto? (the cacti look familiar to me...).

I like wandering around in greenhouse/conservatory type places during the winter. I'm lucky to have one right on campus where I work.

Yes, Allan Gardens is between Carlton and Gerrard, and east of Jarvis.

The Mediterranean greenhouse and RBG is nice to visit in winter, too.
