"aventail: n a curtain of mail attached by means of staples (vervelles) around the base of a helmet, and covering the shoulders"

We used to have to use a software product called Aventail Connect, which was a Web-based tool for securely connecting to systems through firewalls. Interesting to know the origin of the term.

Of course, when I first heard of the product all I could think of was "here comes Peter Aventail" to the tune of "Peter Cottontail". ;-)

I noticed that, too, a strange coincidence. The word comes from Ares, of course.

"apeek"? I'm shocked.

No "aoudad" alternative? Even in Canada?

I checked that spelling and it's also correct. I was unaware of it.

Ah, good. So I can continue to be appalled by "apeek".

You can, but apparently it is a legitimate spelling.

[livejournal.com profile] stealthpup got me hooked on online Scrabble, but I'm not currently playing against anyone else from LJ, that I know of. I haven't yet joined the real-life tournament circuit, but I did win my first tournament on Jomarco.com this month.
