When the madness takes you
it's all sky in your head
eyes streaming sapphires
sun stutters catching your throat.
You're blind to everything
but the singularity.
Until you hit pavement
with wreckage of wax wings
broken, suffocating,
never saw it coming.

It will take you again.
Can't fight it
unless you split your breastplate
let life drain
to chill, languish
always in shadow.

Or keep embracing
letting it take you
spin dump dizzy
agonizing fire whip
until one day you get it right
knock high
and see the world.

Then
no words
for a while.

Afterward
if you lose your wings
you'll remember the way
paths and rivers crossed
never forget
the quilted land from above
with its eyes, and flesh
and clear pulse.
Keep walking.

You'll smile
in the glow of one moment
always flying.

Writing it was like a collision in midair, just now.

I'm working on a self-printed little chapbook of love poetry and wanted some fresh material. But most of the time I can't write poems for wanting to. I just have to sort of sit here, wait, pretend to do all sorts of other things, and sometimes.....wham.

Would you accept "Wow!" as an adequate comment?

Thank you, I would. This one came in a flash and left me feeling the same.

Thank you. I realize it's pretty raw and needs some revision. If you have any constructive criticism, I'm quite open to it, at least with respect to poetry. ;-)

I don't know if it's just because I'm tired or what, but this almost made me cry (even with the hopeful note at the end).

And that makes me want to hold you.

The ending is bittersweet. The most powerful emotions are ephemeral. We can't hold onto them forever. But they can make us better.

I must say this: in this time of upheaval and change in my own life -- even though it is for the good -- I could use some holding in your arms.

This only strengthens my resolve that I will see you this summer.
