A quiet Saturday with my cubby has been just the right medicine to both relax and energize me. Funny how those go together.

This morning looked like a blizzard, but by the time I picked

djjo up from the bus station at noon, the sun had come out, turning this into a perfect January day: not too cold with a light, fresh layer of snow. If Ontario winters stayed like this I wouldn't mind so much. It's the bitter freezing, storms and bad driving, and relentless gloomy weather (particularly in November and February) that get to me.

After mushroom cheese omelettes, we snuggled down for the afternoon to watch Contact, Danny for the first time and me for about the tenth. It's one of my all-time favourites, and there's no other fictional character I identify with more closely than Dr. Ellie Arroway. Just wish I had her gumption sometimes.

Afterward the sun was still shining, so we went for a walk. Some rain must have fallen before the snow, because every tree sparkled with tiny icicles. The Eramosa River rippled darkly under a painterly sky. The light was so exquisite I wished I could bottle it, but photographs must suffice.
