It probably comes from growing up the artistic youngest child of two neat freaks. This scene from the New Best Friend episode of AbFab is one of my favourites, recorded for posterity.

Edina: I just want surfaces, darling. Where have my surfaces gone, hmm? I just want clean lines and surfaces. I don't want this, darling. Look, I don't want this. I don't want things on places like that. Things on places. I don't want that. Is this yours?

Saffy: Yes.

Edina: Could it not be left around? Does it not have a home to go to?

Mrs. Monsoon: (entering) Oh, that could have been you talking then, Saffy.

Edina: Oh God! What do you want?

Mrs. Monsoon: Hmm?

Edina: God, I've got enough trouble with surface furniture without occasional old people scattered about the place.

And later....

Patsy: Neat? She was so anally retentive she couldn't sit down for fear of sucking up the furniture.

I so love that episode of AbFab, and I can't tell you how much the anally retentive applies to my current roommate.

I watched it recently with him and I so badly wanted to say "Remind you of anyone?" LOL

*hugs*

It's hard for me to realize how weird my childhood was until I consider extremely ordered it was compared to the way other people live. My room by comparison usually looked like a tornado had hit. It has taken me years to learn to look after my home without constant harrassment from neat freaks.

Ah, the advent of Max and Bettina. I did so adore the flashback to the White Room. priceless. And the anally retentive line has become a fixture in our conversation...

That white room must be one of the most memorable scenes from the series. And yes, it's remarkable how AbFab has seeped into our idioms, almost like Shakespeare.

Hehe, it's a very popular series! I rented it to watch with Marian, who had only seen a couple episodes from the first season before. I had to write down this scene before taking the DVDs back.
