Gay accent

We arrived safely home a few minutes ago from a pleasant visit with my parents. More on that tomorrow.

Tonight we're watching Rufus Wainwright Live from the Filmore. All three of us have come to adore Rufus in the past year.

The DVD starts with him doing an ad lib interview on the streets of San Francisco.

Marian turned to me at once and said, "He has a gay accent."

Which cut us to pieces.

Well for heaven's sake, I guess I'm going to have to check this guy out. Kept hearing about "Rufus" on Kyana's livejournal -- thought he was one of her sons -- finally just yesterday realized he's a singer and she's a devoted fan -- know nothing more! But Kyana has lots of photos of him on her journal (sorry I still can't manage to make a live link, I tried and failed)

For a couple years I knew him only as the singer of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" on the soundtrack of Shrek. Then [livejournal.com profile] willowing introduced me to "What a world", and I was instantly hooked. Elton John described Wainwright as the best songwriter alive. He's gay, he's Canadian, he's a poet, what more can I say?

He's the son of Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III. I wonder if that had anything to do with his talent? :)

He's very dramatic these days. I highly recommend his first and second albums (self titled and Poses), though he started to lose me with the Want albums. Poses, however, is phenomenal.

The Want albums are actually the ones that turned me onto Rufus, in fact Want One is absolutely one of my favourites, a desert album disc for sure. Want Two is more arty and innovative perhaps, but successful musically, and contains his best poetry so far. "Little sister", "The art teacher" and "Gay messiah" are some of his most remarkable songs. Poses is the only album I don't own yet, but I like several tracks so it's high on my list to purchase.

Want One is the album I would most recommend. I don't have Poses and don't know it as well yet, but it is also good.
