Up the road in London lives [livejournal.com profile] finch_bear, but I never heard of him until [livejournal.com profile] dakoopst visited from Atlanta last summer. We finally met last month. I just returned from another day spent with Tim and his partner Dave, exceedingly pleasant.

We lunched at Stone Crock in St. Jacob's. My parents used to meet me there when I was in university. It has expanded to occupy four shop spaces. Afterward we browsed a rambling antique store, used book store, candy shop, and Exotic Wings in St. Clements. We entered a store selling truckloads of brooms. The scent evoked memories of hay lofts.

Rain cancelled hiking, so we visited here before seeking dinner.

[livejournal.com profile] ghostsandrobots, we must someday attend Café Aquarius, a vegan restaurant famous with out-of-towners. I've never eaten there. We arrived at 8 p.m just as it closed.

We crossed to Diana's Restaurant, another scene of drastic renovations. A greasy spoon that served Indian food, where artists chatted over tureens of chai latté, it has gone upscale with fancy menus and ice-sculpture lighting. My friends were impressed, but I wouldn't have changed anything about old Diana's. The service was disorganized. Still, an excellent meal and fitting close to a memorable day.

Connor, when you're here we must drive to St. Jacob's in the heart of Ontario's Mennonite Country. There's lovely countryside, also a number of artisan shops. If we go during the week we can leisurely browse without the tourist crowds, but Saturdays there is a huge and colourful farmer's market.

Another thing to consider is the Stratford Festival, one of the world's best places to see Shakespearean theatre if you're into that kind of thing, but other performances are also outstanding. It looks like most plays open in May.

Cheers,
Van

Wow, I love that picture. What a beautiful contrast of color. That print would look lovely in my bathroom. *I can't believe I just used the word lovely in a sentence*

I rarely edit photos much, but this one could sure use some PhotoShopping. What's left of my tax return might go to purchase that software. I couldn't resist posting the photo with its flaws because the colours and shading are so, well, lovely.

I'm glad that Diana's has at least reopened; I was in Guelph last month and hoped to have dinner there, and was disappointed to see it closed. Too bad about the changes though - that was my favourite no-frills, pre-concert, always-good curry fix!

Unfortunately I can't recommend the food because Indian cuisine does not agree with me. Even the tandoori chicken caused my system considerable alarm last night. I had expected to be able to buy something non-Indian, but the menu has become more focused. My friends, however, enjoyed their food immensely. I suspect the prices have gone up, though. Entrees cost anything from $12 to $25, with most in the high teens.
