Kathy, there's still room in my car.
You can come with us anytime you like.
Take a ride in the city lane.
We're not coming home till late.
See all the headlights watching.
You can hear the whole world waiting
for your smile.

There's a place in my back pocket
a bottom drawer, too, where I keep people and places.
I've a photograph of you and the little white dog
from a farm in New York
where his teeth fell out.
He follows strangers in the park
because he can't remember who rescued him
but we all know.
So smile for the camera, Kathy.
Never stop riding with us
our flaky pastries, organic grapes
and mugs of herbal passion teas.

Kathy, you can ride in the back seat if you like.
You can cry if you want
because we all like your voice
if it's happy or sad.
We will talk about anything
we need to hear.
You know how to make someone
feel like times are changing.

Kathy, don't stay alone tonight.
You can ride in my car.
Even hide in the storage top if you want
from all the traffic.
We all know
you're a champion deep inside.

Oh my! I love this! This seems like a new departure for you, Van.

I'm not sure what that phrase "new departure" means. It doesn't make any sense when I stop to think about it. How about "new direction" instead.

Maybe you're right. I feel a burgeoning of friendship and experience these days (at least, I'm busier), so perhaps I have new things to say. Also I've been paying a lot more attention to song lyrics the past year or so (hence my post about Rufus Wainwright recently), and that influenced the way I wrote this.

This sounds a lot like a song -- I was looking to see who wrote it!

I like this a lot.

I did some muddling in my notebook with a pen, then I fiddled at the keyboard for a while. Then the poem appeared in my journal. I think I wrote it, though I'm not certain. Sorry for being so bizarre, but that's the way it feels sometimes. ;-)

And thanks.

KATHY

That was really lovely, Van. I've only known Kathy for three months, but she has become a very important part of my life; I can tell that you feel the same way. BK

Really, Kathy could be any one of us.

These are very lyrical, begging to be set to music.

I wish I had that talent.

Stephen.
Another champion.
Of beauty.
Deep inside.

What is Piedmont Park like in autumn?

Rolling hills, turning leaves, the lingering warmth of summer tinged with winter's more melancholy note...

I think you'd like it, though it IS an urban park. :)

And I think I meant I wish I had the talent to compose the music for your words. :)

Oh, I understand. I practically had a melody in my head while working, but writing it down would be too much of a stretch for me, too.

one of the keys to sanity for me
is to surround myself with beauty
all forms of beauty,
from a thoughtful picture on my desk
to a favorite ink pen in my pocket
from books and articles that uplift me
to people and loved ones that inspire me

great stuff Van,
Really lovely

love

I seem to have a lot of beauty in my life these days. Funny how it makes me feel a little crazy at times, but in a good way.

Can't wait to meet you in the flesh.

Love,
Van

Thanks Vicki. Hope things are going okay with you. I haven't had time to read LJ the past couple of days, and today I'm feeling reclusive, but will try to catch up this evening.
