I sketched this in a few minutes on Sunday morning. It's the first portrait I've attempted in years. The photo was taken after lunch.

That's really excellent, Van. And in just a few minutes? I'm really impressed. :-)

It seems best to keep the pencil moving, especially when I haven't drawn in a while and it's tempting to focus on the flaws.

There isn't enough time for all the things I want to do.

Thanks Shimmer. It's my first real attempt at a portrait since 1987.

Hi! It is absolutely the best place to rest peacefully, although I have a hard time closing my eyes for looking at the water!

That's lovely! I've long felt that taking a photo of someone is a way of expressing love, drawing a portrait must be even more so.

I figure my last real effort at a portrait was 1987. Guess I was waiting for inspiration.

Thank you for a wonderfull time this weekend Van. It was hard not to skeek a look while you were doing the drawing - I wanted to save it till you showed me. WOW! And you even got some of the sock colouring!

hugs and keep well. I'll get some pics posted soon.

I saw you glancing once or twice. Thanks for knitting long enough for me to sketch this. I didn't realize what I was going to draw until I sat down.

I'll post more photos here through the week, but if you want to see them all on Flickr, check here:

Hi Van;

I'm totally blown away at this fabulous portrait! You say you haven't done a portrait for several years, then you are very, very good!!! Compared to your experience I'm a rank beginner but you are an inspiration to keep learning! Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece of art.

How I wish I could draw.

My problem is, I can visualize things I can't execute. I'll tell them to the Boyfriend who then attempts to draw it (it irritated him, I think, when I once said: 'No - I need the drawing rotated a smidgen THIS way', because, well, I'm not very good at describing spatial matters either...).

Wow! You are a multitalented person-photography, poetry, knitting, and drawing! And those are the ones I can dredge up in my woman of a certain age foggy memory! You are amazing!
