I was taking a pee break when it hit me: in order to write Pilgrim's Cross I ought to read the Bible again. Especially since Jesus is a conceptual character in the novel. And not only the Bible, but also as much ex-gay literature as I can lay hands on. I realized this reading would be necessary when I wrote the first draft two years ago, but subsequently managed to delete the idea from memory.
The funniest part is, I finally sent all my ex-gay books to the landfill last month when I cleaned the basement, after keeping them more than a decade for this very purpose (I would not even think of taking them to a secondhand store).
Dear subconscious, I know you want the best for me, but next time consult me before you pull a move like that.
Ah well, I can relearn everything I need to know online, where there is no shortage of ex-gay propaganda.
