New city council

Unofficial results from the Guelph municipal election indicate a sweeping and satisfying change of city council. Former mayor Karen Farbridge shows a solid victory over incumbent Kate Quarrie. Bob Bell, my first choice for Ward 1 councillor, won by a landslide. Second place may be decided by a single vote. 35,205 of 88,538 eligible voters cast ballots, or 39.8 per cent, much higher than the usual 25 per cent.

My pick for ward councillor lost by quite a bit, and his more conservative competitor won out.

But on the other hand, we've elected a very socialist member to the Board of Control.

Sounds like a very different climate in London. Guelph seems to have elected a very socialist council. It is certainly environment-friendly, in keeping with tradition but contrary to the previous council.

Ours is mixed at best. In my ward the winner has said she's "environmentally friendly" but been vauge about what she would or wouldn't do to that end; her main competitor, who lost by a landslide, is very active on envrionmental projects in the city. Overall I think London tends to elect more conservative/republican type councils than Guelph or Toronto would.

i was rather proud of the turnout. it's good to see. it shows that people are paying attention, or at least are upset about things (let's be honest). i love that Farbridge won by that much. :)

Exciting isn't it? This might be the first municipal election I've ever voted in, and I do feel that my vote counted.
