Very evocative writing. I'm not familiar with the practice of "free" writing--sounds a lot like what occultists sometimes describe as "automatic" writing.
And I see you finally met Wonder boy NY! Historic!
I attempted some automatic writing as a teenager. I do a lot of free writing now; morning pages are essentially a free writing exercise. The two processes are similar in that the writer tries to break down barriers to spontaneous expression, different in that free writing is usually more-or-less conscious, with certain ground rules, or a focus chosen by the writer. In this case, the basic idea—two people sitting in a car with a sense of alienation, and blue sky pressing in—had been rattling around in my head for days, so I gave myself a few minutes to dispatch it and see where it would lead. So for free writing you may choose a topic, characters and/or destination, attempt to silence the inner critic and remain open to unexpected turns of narrative or dialogue, but focus on writing a segment of poetry, narrative or essay. I suppose automatic writing is an extreme form of free writing in which you dispense with any preconceived focus or guidelines. Sometimes when I'm bored or distracted, I fill my morning pages with nonsense words, which is therapeutic.
