Unthinkable
Feb. 11th, 2008 07:12 pmI had just returned home from my first full day back at work, and was putting ingredients in the bread machine, looking forward to a pleasant evening in the restored apartment, when it happened again. The pipes burst upstairs.
It was 6:05 p.m. Fortunately I was working in the kitchen and heard the sound of deluge. Unfortunately Joanne had just closed the store and left, so I couldn't turn the water off. I couldn't reach the landlord, so I called 911. First the dispatcher had the gall to tell me it wasn't an emergency, then perhaps she heard the sound of gallons of water pouring into pails as I hauled every container I could find into the hall. Or maybe it was the hysteria in my voice. She put me through to the fire department, where the operator responded appropriately.
This time none of my stuff was damaged. The pipes burst in a different location, and most of the water fell in the hall. I contained most of it, but the carpet is still soaking wet. The insurance adjuster will have to be recalled and more repairs done at who knows what inconvenience to myself. Again I have no running water, so I will return to Sylvie and Sarah's place tonight.
I have had it. I feel like giving up, but Les happened to call just now to discuss work tomorrow, and he told me not to do that. He said to take whatever time I need to do what I must do.
Tomorrow I will begin looking in earnest for another apartment.
Goodnight.

Date: 2008-02-12 02:00 am (UTC)Sounds like there's an uninsulated pipe in an overly exposed place. And somebody needs to sit on the landlord's head until he fixes it.
But that's probably not something you'd find a whole lot of fun, so looking for another apartment is probably a good idea.
