I went to the covered bridge to take some scenic pictures of the Speed River, but as usual wound up ecstatically distracted by tiny beasts. The Bombus requires no introduction. The other is a moth, Alypia octomaculata, otherwise known as Eight-spotted Forester. It is a strong and agile flyer.
The field guides say adults appear in late spring; a second brood appears in August only in the southern part of its range, i.e. toward Texas. But here it is. I wonder what this means. Such tiny mysteries intrigue me.
Afterward I drove to the big Zehr's over on Paisley Road, and spent a good hour perusing the aisles. They have gluten-free products I haven't seen anywhere else: three types of frozen pizza crust, blueberry pie (and others), English muffins and bagels, plus a wide variety of breads. This is a tight week so I only took a loaf of bread, but it looks like a good place to shop in future.
