Sarah and I were supposed to meet at The Cornerstone at 8 p.m., but after taking Danny to the bus at 7 I decided to try dropping by her place instead. It would save us both going out again in the bitter wind.

I'd forgotten about Hanukkah. I caught her and Michele in the midst of making latkes and applesauce. They were pleased to have me join them, so we sat together in the porch. They lit the shamash candle, and the first Hanukkah candle on the menorah, and sang the blessings. I had been conscious of missing the Festival of Lights at Kensington Market this year, but this meant at least as much. Sarah and Michele said my company added to their celebration.

We ate, then Michele cleared the dishes and went upstairs to read while Sarah and I held our weekly planning meeting. How refreshing it is to face this chaotic week with intention.

Now the days grow longer. Wherever you are, may light shine in the darkness.

So lovely that your thoughtfulness in seeking to avoid a walk in the cold wind for your friend that you avoided a chronological disruption to her day, and joined in more than one gentle transition.

Frost is wondrous.
