Dad's pneumonia was probably caused by bacteria in his blood picked up in London. The infection and fever are under control, but there is an unexplained pain in his upper right chest, possibly a pulled muscle. The surgeon who performed the bypass surgery on February 3 wants to check everything out. Besides, Leamington Hospital is not equipped for post-op patients. So the surgeon wants Dad back in London. An ambulance will transport him as soon as a bed is free, probably tonight or tomorrow. My uncle will follow the ambulance to help Dad get settled, then drive home. I will probably go to London tomorrow and stick around until he is released, then take him home. I won't have any work next week, so I can stay with him for a few days.

I have never heard Dad so emotional as he was on the phone today. But everyone I have talked to says he is improving, and that the doctors are taking every precaution but there does not seem to be a serious concern. Still, I can understand why this is scary for someone who was never in hospital except to have his tonsils out at age six. I am picking up some of his anxiety, of course.

My best wishes for your father's safe, smooth healing. (I would ordinarily offer prayers but refrain from doing so out of respect for your metaphysical views.)

hugs, Shimmer

Dear Shimmer, I do not know everything, and kindness is never in vain. Do whatever seems appropriate to you. Many thanks.

It's anything but unusual for post-surgery to bring out emotion, even without an opportunistic infection as well.

We live in such a privileged age, where hospital care is simply available, and getting to loved ones far over the horizon when we need to is entirely plausible. I'm glad you are able to.

Unfortunately that isn't the end of it. He has a drug-resistant infection, but I'm hopeful they'll get it treated soon.

erg, sounds nerve-wracking. I hope your trip up to london goes smoothly and you feel better once you see him in person and he's settled.

is he going to be in the hospital on western's campus in london? that's where my aunt works (orthopedic floor) and where my grandparents were.
