We are in Ottawa for the long weekend. Until now I had spent less than eight hours of my life in our nation's capital. I especially enjoyed coming by train. I had a nice visit with Sylvie, who moved here earlier this month, and we have been hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] shadcub and [livejournal.com profile] rticboy.

Friday night I observed someone, who looked like [livejournal.com profile] ghostsandrobots with a bob cut, channeling Alanis Morisette at gay karaoke. It seemed like one of Ziggy's dreams except it really happened. Swizzles is a tiny dive down a flight of stairs at the back of a parking lot, like a gay bar that didn't bother to emerge from the underground.

Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] djjo and I walked around Parliament Hill before indulging in lunch at Byward Market, then taking in a couple exhibits at the National Gallery. The art was underwhelming, and my legs would rather have stayed in a sidewalk pub in the market.

I just love this portrait of Danny. not least because the composition, particularly with those big blurry gingerbready bits of gothic grillwork in the foreground, reminds me a lot of some of my favorite super-stylised 1960s British horror films!

Is he an evil genius plotting world domination... or a gentle professor and authority on the occult about to be caught in the crossfire? *cue suspenseful music*

If he could spin and knit his way to world domination, I wouldn't be surprised, but the latter seems more in character.

For a moment I thought it was Harry Potter, or more likely, his dad. Must be the subliminal suggestion of the towers and spires behind him. ;o)

Canada's Parliament Building is rather bizarre, especially the stonework. It would make an excellent Hogwartz.
