The novelty has worn off. This new habit (of getting up early) hurts, and I find myself drifting back to sleep after the news. But it is a habit, I've been doing it for three weeks now, and I can blackmail myself into sitting upright on the edge of the bed, because if I don't I will have to tell you. And then somebody will get on my case, won't you? Maybe. Any rationale that works, works.

Once I get into the routine it is rewarding.

And afterward, having a little spare time to look at my friends' page this morning really lends a boost, with a word image of an early-morning snowfall in Toronto, a photograph of a warm courtyard in Santa Fe, and colourful pysanky (traditional Ukranian Easter egg). Now into clothes, and slush and snow.

You know, you'd look great in leather.

Yes, I know exactly what you're talking about. After a while resistance builds up because the novelty has worn off. Perservering worked in my case, but I've been a bit slacker recently. Or at least, I'm getting on with it, but not as much as I ought to!

What's the main thing you want to be "getting on with" these days?

My novel! I need to rework it.

hang in there, Van... Getting up early will be easier as the light comes earlier...

Yes, I look forward to that. It's kind of nice being up (once I make the hurdle out of bed) for a couple hours in the dark, but it will be even nicer to make more use of daylight when it comes.

(laughs) I can see how posting one's failure to Livejournal would be a powerful incentive NOT to fail! I send you sympathetic encouragement; it takes longer than we think to get new routines properly ingrained into automatic habits...and to undo bad habits.

Thank you! Publicizing my progress is a key part of this process, and it does seem to be helping.
