I was filmed at Ed Video recently, recording a recital of my poem, "Patchwork". It was originally posted on Guelph Spoken Word channel along with a film of my friend Beth Anne doing Gender martinis.

Both the poem and your telling of it is beautiful.

And Gender Matinis...it reminds me so much of something I wrote in the thick of everything in December 2007. Thanks!!

Thank you, and I would like to read that piece of yours sometime.

Thanks for the compliment, but I'm more concerned with the poem.

Wow, Van, goosebumps! Such rich imagery, it sparked my soul.

And RESPECT: Publishing one's poetry takes courage, but presenting it as the spoken word before others ... double courage, that.

How absolutely great to see you in action!

I get so nervous when I go to readings that my hands shake. I've been going to Guelph Spoken Word where it's mostly slam poetry. I feel out of place, but the younger poets keep encouraging me to go. I guess they appreciate the link with my generation. I must start memorizing some of my work so I won't have to hold a page and my anxiety will be less apparent.

I didn't want to do this recording session, but Beth Anne hounded me, so I agreed. Actually I found it a lot better performing in front of a camera than a large audience. Maybe because I've modeled for a lot of still photography and enjoyed the experience. Anyway, I found it a lot easier to get unstuck from the words and concentrate on how I wanted to express them. The guy who filmed the session was an excellent coach, too. I could tell the moment I walked into the studio, he picked up on certain of my qualities and worked with them.

Tonight was not my first time listening to this. I've always been curious about the real sound of my LJ friend voices. Hearing yours was very comforting. I've always found your writing soothing, and at times, full of energy. I just wanted to thank you for be a friend, such as you are, but also making me think about the things that are important to my life that I have sadly neglected recently.

Just ran across this. It touched a very familiar place and evoked some vivid memories. Thanks so much for sharing it.
