Les dropped me off at home. I washed some dishes, had dinner, packed to head to Toronto for the weekend and went down to the street. My car was gone. Why would anyone want to steal a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire with 188,000 km and looking every cm of it? I was frantic.

I called the police and discovered it had been towed for street cleaning. The towing company would have charged an extra $35 for me to pick it up tonight, so I opted to wait until 9 a.m. tomorrow and pay $61.

So I'm spending the evening at home. It has been go, go, go. I'm tired, drained and solitude-deprived, so this isn't the end of the world. I just wish the enforced down time hadn't cost half a day's pay.

I'm trying to focus on the highlights of the week just past. Niagara-on-the-Lake was full of magnolias in bloom.

The bell tower at St. Mark's has a carillon. The door to the tower is behind the organ loft, so Wednesday morning we crept up the ladder to see it. It is programmed to play songs a few times a day, some hymns and some folk songs like Scarborough Fair.

Oh phooey, what an annoying event. Good for you for putting it in perspective of some of the highlights of your week.

Yes, it had been an interesting week, so it came naturally to frame the misfortune that way, and doing so made me feel better. I'll try to remember that trick for when times are not as pleasant!

Holy. Shit. I'm so sorry, darlin'. {{{Hugs}}}

On a lighter note, your posts about NotL have made us want to "do" it as a day trip some weekend this summer. Think you might want to be a bit of a Tour Guide? :-)

That would be fun. Besides things I've mentioned here, there is a great fort to visit, and the town is smack in the middle of Ontario's wine region. Just be warned, it is a tourist trap. There really is no way to avoid crowds on a summer weekend, even a weekday for that matter.

Ah, and I'm sure they told you there had been proper public notice, too; there will come a time than municipalities will need to do more than put an ad in a newspaper to claim that, but that day may not come before local dailies are gone ...

Here's to a good weekend regardless.

You're right. The woman at the towing company said notices were posted "a few days ahead." Any notice could not have been posted earlier than Thursday (unless, as you suggest, they posted it in the newspaper), and my car was towed on Friday. It is irresponsible.

argh...i'm sure you didn't need that moment (hour?) of panic about your car, and I'm sorry you have to cough up to retrieve it.

It took about half an hour for me to carry my luggage down, discover the car was missing, stand a few moments in shock, leave my tools and laundry standing on the sidewalk, run around the block twice with my laptop and other luggage on my back, carry everything back up two flights of stairs, wash my face, search for my insurance form because in my panic I could not remember the last three digits of my license plate, call 911, realize it was not an emergency, call the police instead, and discover my car had been towed. I was too relieved to be infuriated.

On the other hand, what a relief that the car wasn't stolen.
