Van, I debated even saying anything here, but if it's important to listen to the body, then please be aware that there is NOT a consensus on the role of cholesterol in the body. I don't want to hijack your lovely post more than I have already but since you have opened my mind to other ways of thinking before, I thus return the favor.
Yes, actually you have drawn my attention to that before, and I've heard similar arguments from other sources. I give it some credence. I was frustrated when I brought it up with my doctor and she didn't seem to know what I was talking about. She is more concerned about my ratio of good to bad cholesterol than my overall blood cholesterol (actually she backed off the cholesterol issue a bit when I told her about the "6 changes method", and she affirmed my decision to deal with the debt first, deferring other issues to later in the year). I am still alarmed about the cholesterol question because my father (who has normal blood cholesterol) developed angina and atheroschlerosis and underwent a triple bypass last year. I have no intention of using medication to decrease my cholesterol, at least not until I have more information. However, I want to start doing regular exercise and improve my diet for other reasons as well, but if these undertakings alter my cholesterol, I can't imagine the effect being harmful. Another thing that interested me: not long ago the news reported a recent study indicating people who were slightly overweight but very active were at the lowest risk of heart attack.
