Marian and Kerri

I've known for months, but had to keep the news under wraps until more family members were aware: [livejournal.com profile] marian_w and Kerri plan to get married next August. I'm concerned that Marian is still very young—she will turn 19 this December—however by next summer they will have been in a domestic partnership for more than two years. I can't accuse them of being hasty. One of the things I like about Kerri is she's family-oriented, in fact she instigates get-togethers with my family. This weekend was a good time.

I'm a bit confused. Is this your daughter?

I understand your concerns about young, but sometimes we just know things. By grandparents married when my grandmother was 19 and went on to share 50+ years of the happiest marriage I have ever had the privelege of witnessing. I wish much luck, love and many years together.

(And family orientated is good in regards to a daughter inlaw!)

My parents were married on Mom's 18th birthday, and Dad was still 17. They were happily married for almost 57 years until Mom's death.

But those were different times. Mom wanted to be a teacher, but her father would not allow her to go to university, so eloping was an act of rebellion. In our grandparents' era, few women had any alternatives, so the earlier the better. Many achieved happiness, but for others it was a trap.

My children have a lot more opportunities, and I encourage them to take time making their choices.

But you're right: "sometimes we just know things." Marian is a lot more determined and independent than I was at 18, and I have confidence in her.
