My application was accepted and I have started writing web content. I'm on probation for the first five articles, then I can ask to be promoted to the next pay level. While on probation I can only write one article at a time until it is approved by an editor. My first two articles have passed inspection, so I will be paid for them unless the clients reject them, which seems unlikely. I've earned $5.60.
There is no soul in this writing. The articles promote products and services. I pick a topic, do some research, then regurgitate information without plagiarizing. The writing quality probably matters less than keyword density. Ultimately I need to churn out at two 500-word stories per hour at the highest pay level ($.03 per word) to make it worthwhile.
It's not impossible, but for now one story takes two or three hours. This is what I'll be doing during free evenings for the next while. I find it oddly compelling. It is a challenge to work more efficiently, to stop fussing, just let ideas flow. Because yes, I am energized enough by the process of research and writing that I don't care too much what it's about. It will get easier. There are enough topics to choose from that I can pass over particularly odious stuff, like gambling.
I'm becoming aware of other opportunities for freelance web writing. I think I'll apply to eHow. Eventually I will find avenues to write articles (and earn money from them) about things I love.
