I am terrified of photographing strangers. I don't know why. As a reporter I had to photograph all kinds of people whether they objected or not. Somewhere in the intervening years I lost my courage. It is an intolerable fear. I want to photograph people and have been bracing myself for it.

This morning I had no choice. It was take the picture or consign myself to eternal conflagration. To walk away from this moment would have been artistic cowardice of the highest order.

The act was exhilerating.

Hey Van. That's excellent inititaive - and an excellent photo as a result.

From the sneaking up behind trick, you'll soon be able to graduate to the pretending to photograph something else method, then the full frontal photograph and run technique and finally the mind if I take your photo? request.

The world is your oyster . . .

After all I was trained as a journalist and worked as one for a few years. I know how to do things. The main thing missing is self-confidence. That can be relearned.

it's a lovely picture. did you ask her mother, 'do you mind?
i'll make you a copy if you like.' perhaps it's an overreaction
to taking folks pictures, when they obviously didn't want them
taken? just askin'.~paul

I haven't written much about my past on LJ. I worked as a staff journalist for a magazine company (1988-1989), a reporter and editor for a community newspaper (1989-1991), and a public relations writer for a major charity until 1995 when severe depression hit. I haven't had much work since then. Hopefully that will change soon.

I've never been able to make myself comfortable with just shooting anonymously yet, if you don't do it, you often lose the shot that you want. It's often just not practical to "ask first and shoot second". I can't tell you how many shots I've not taken because I wasn't comfortable just shooting without permission.

Ultimately, I found it was easier to just "shoot first and ask second". It often helps to offer the person a copy of the photo as compensation for letting you shoot.

You're right. Interacting with the subject changes the scene. While I was trying to get up the guts, I missed a photo of the little girl standing there, throwing stones into the river. After I spoke to her mother, she squatted down and didn't stand up again. Maybe she was self-conscious. It still made a rewarding shot.

I thought of offering a print; that is a good idea. Unfortunately, at the moment I can't afford a new colour cartridge for my printer.

You're right!! Give her some pointy ears, and a panflute and you're sooo totally set!

I love your photos, they always seem to capture something serene and peaceful.

Aw, come on. A genuine skeksi would suck the life essence out of podlins and freak out at the sight of a gelfling.
