I'm listening to k.d. lang's newly released studio album for the first time, and loving it immediately. This is the first one since the 80s recorded with a band, and works to perfection with her incomparable voice. This may rank alongside Ingenue for original material.

I really liked Ingenue, but I haven't heard anything of hers for years. I might check this one out. Thanks!

I highly, highly recommend Hymns of the 49th Parallel (2002), in which she covers songs by other Canadians like Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. My dear friend [livejournal.com profile] ghostsandrobots (an American) introduced me to it. We spent our first evening together listening to it into the wee hours. It is far and away my favourite album that isn't Classical. k.d. admits she isn't a first-rate songwriter, but I say her voice is one of the crown jewels. The lyrics on this new album are sounding pretty good.

I'll check that other one out too. Thanks for the recommendation. I think I vaguely remember when it came out but I'm not sure if I ever heard anything from it.
