For dinner I made zucchini-ricotta fritters accompanied by Essex County corn-on-the-cob. Simple, nutritious, easy to adapt, distinctly different from anything else I make, and a tasty meatless entree, they will likely become part of the household culinary canon.

Problems with fatigue plague me most days. My moods have been fine, and the new prescription reading glasses have eliminated frequent migraine-like visual symptoms and headaches I was having. Now I am just plain exhausted four or five days out of the week. It's worst first thing, then I rally late morning, start to drag again in the afternoon and practically collapse after work. I saw my therapist this afternoon and she agreed with my suspicion that something hormonal is out of whack: maybe hypothyroidism, adrenal fatigue or andropause. I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow morning. There is probably not much point in trying to sort out my diet until I get to the bottom of this question.

As usual, my therapist had some excellent practical suggestions. She recommended taking a good snack including protein for the drive home from work to give my body an energy boost and address terrible food cravings I get at that time. What I normally take for that purpose is a muffin, but fruit and starch alone only makes me crave more fat and protein, often leading to a wayside stop for chips, chocolate or beef jerky. Her idea should have been obvious, but therapists are good at stating such things, aren't they?

"You should be a nutritionist," I told her. "No, you're too good at what you do."

We had some good laughs. I wish we could just be friends and talk about something other than me. Despite feeling like crap half the time, I'm as happy as ever.
