The Content Authority allows writers to advertise for direct orders. The way we do this is by creating a ruleset describing what types of articles we can write. We are also allowed to set our own rates. I've avoided doing this until today. Here is how I hung out a shingle.

Food and Nutrition
Recipes or articles about food and nutrition. Specific dietary issues such as gluten-intolerances are welcome.
Tags: food, diet, gluten-intolerance, gluten-free, cooking

Press Releases
These articles will be written in press release style designed to be sent to journalists or news outlets. Please provide detailed, accurate information or links to resources about a newsworthy event or situation. I have work experience as a newspaper reporter, and as a media relations writer for a large international charity, but will write for other kinds of business and organizations. The writing style for this type of assignment should be clear and concise, so the shorter end of the word count is preferable.

Science and Nature
Articles related to biology, ecology, environmental issues and general sciences. I have a Bachelor of Science specializing in biological sciences with a good general scientific knowledge. I can interpret these topics for a general audience.
Tags: science, biology, nature, ecology, environment, botany, astronomy, gardening, landscaping

Traveller
Articles about travel and geography. I am a Canadian with some travelling experience in North America, but mostly an armchair traveller who loves researching new places. I am equally happy camping or exploring busy cultural centers. I have a decent background knowledge of geography and history. Non-travel articles related to specific locations are also welcome.

Based on past orders, the travel category should be the most marketable. I included "Press Releases" because of a discussion I noticed in the writers forum. A client had apparently placed some orders requiring this style. I have experience in that format. Not much has turned up yet along the lines of food and nature, so those categories are mostly wishful thinking.

Web content, anyone?

If there is no downside to trying, I think you should consider setting your rate at a dollar a word. There are clients out there who would genuinely value your skills at that level. You might not find them but it's worth trying.

Having your bluff called is not a disaster. But starting with too low a rate is a common and serious mistake which can be hard to recover from. My business coach made a real big deal about that.

That would be true if I were selling a more clearly-defined product or service. Most freelance writers are generalists who get paid different rates for different kinds of work. Writing for this website will not hurt my prospects for pitching a story to a magazine that pays $750 or $3,000 per article. I need to look elsewhere for more lucrative work, but meanwhile I'm earning whatever experience and income I can.
