The view from my desk

First thing in the morning, the street is dark with fallen rain. A thunderstorm passed in the night. I missed it. I don't know about it until Cathy, the homecare nurse, tells me how her dog jumped into bed and woke her.

I want to take pictures around my apartment. Yesterday I removed the batteries from my beard trimmer and put them in my camera, a temporary solution.

Today I walk down the street to the larger variety store to buy some batteries that work. They cost almost twice as much as the ones I bought on Tuesday. This is the problem with digital cameras. I thought I would save the money I used to spend on film and developing. Turns out I'm spending it on batteries.

At Short Stop variety I indulge in another weakness: candy. It's a new brand of jelly bean called Teenee Beanies. The name should be enough to gag me, but impulsively I buy.

The air outside is drenched and fragrant. That's Ontario for you: winter one day, summer the next.

I come home and take pictures of my office and living room windows. Outside is desolation. My apartment overlooks Highway 7.

But I love having a bright place to work. This is my morning room, full of light.

I'm glad you brought up the point about batteries. I've been debating whether to buy a digital camera and had not considered this downside. Do you really think the cost of batteries is outweighing the saving?
Lovely plant-filled window, and the hanging pot has a beautiful rounded shape.

I probably spend as much on batteries as I used to spend on film, but only because I take a lot more pictures, which is a good thing. However, I miss the wide-angle and telephoto lenses with my old camera.

There's a solution to your battery problem if your camera uses standard AA batteries. You can buy a rechargeable unit plus rechargeable batteries. I bought a unit for about 19.00 and the batteries are roughly the same cost as normal AA batteries. My camera takes 4 AA batteries. I now keep about 16 rechargeable batteries around and usually have one set in the recharger. The rechargeable unit and the batteries have more than paid for themselves. I suspect you can get a recharger for other types of batteries as well.

I couldn't do without my camera now. It goes everywhere with us.

I was about to say - go with rechargeable batteries. They work fine; I have 3 sets of 4. You'll save money and always have batteries. Some brands are supposed better than others, as are some chargers which can discharge before charging which is recommended to do occasionally for longer battery life.

Thanks. I have considered getting a recharger. Sounds like it's worth the money.
