Around the time I started hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] djjo and [livejournal.com profile] danthered, I started receiving spam from "Daniel." The volume steadily increased to the point where I receive more spam from him than anyone else, even "Freida" and "Renae." In fact, I receive multiple spams from "Daniel" every day. Some of these are from repeat addresses and go directly to my junk mail folder, but most are not. The quantity is so overwhelming I wonder whether it's really coincidence. Fortunately, Danny and Daniel's emails always arrive with surnames attached, so I don't have to look at anything from "Daniel" closely before deleting it. But it's puzzling.

I'm not kidding. Just to prove it, here is a list of the spam items I received from "Daniel" in the past 48 hours. No two of them came from the same address.

  1. From: Daniel. Turn your Great Idea into REALITY! Have a New Invention! Product Idea! or Improvement to an existing product? Get started today! with our FREE information package!
(I have an idea: stop the stupid punctuation marks.)

  2. From: Daniel. This Year's Hottest Gift. Everyone loves...The E-Scooter, Fully-Rechargeable Electric-Powered Scooter.
(I can think of things a lot hotter.)

  3. From: Daniel. Get FDA Medications Prescribed Online. Order your next prescription with privacy: Weight loss, Hair loss, Skin care, Stop smoking.
(What drug can I abuse next?)

  4. From: Daniel. Warm Her Up! Try it! For free! Men have viagra. Women have VIGEL.
(Thanks, guys. You know how badly I need this.)

  5. From: Daniel. Get paid real money to drive your own car! With a little know-how you might be able to get a TOTALLY FREE Car.
(Why don't you just spare me the bullshit and send it to me?)

  6. From: Daniel. Learn a Language - 31 Languages in One Revolutionary Program. The Easiest Way to Learn a Foreign Language... Guaranteed!
    (Will I even understand 'Maircan?)

  7. From: Daniel. Amazing High Speed Mini RC Ca.r Hot - New - Exciting!! Mini R/C Twister Buggy Stunt Vehicle
(This ad has annoying toys buzzing around the page at high speed, just what I want in my apartment on Christmas morning.)

  8. From: Daniel. The Only Knives You Will Ever Buy Again - Guaranteed. GINSU 16 piece set.
(The housewife in this ad appears to be slapping her own face to save someone else the trouble.)

  9. From: Daniel. Unlock the Secret to Better Health. Promote Healthy Cholesterol Levels. OmegaMax.
(I only want the secret to less spam.)

Is there any identifying header information you can find, that might be more revealing than the faked headers? Does your mail client allow you to see such things?

It's always possible that one of the Daniels isn't sending this but DOES have a virus that is picking up some of his identifying info and using it to spam you. I don't know what systems they run on. The coincidence may be only that.

Really - it's not me!

But do look out.

My djjo@torque.net account has been picked up by a couple spammers as thier 'sending' email address. It's a pain in the butt.

I sometimes get returned mail cause thier spam couldn't reach a site. For some reason, I'm sending out porn of Japanese girls getting covered in man goo. Oh yum, such fun... NOT!

Hugs and have a good one.
Danny

The worst of it is, quite likely the "spammers" themselves don't know they're doing it. Viruses like Klez can infect one of your friends, pick up your address from their addressbook, and go around masquerading as you.

Quite difficult and annoying when (imagine this with me here) you're an email administrator at a prestigious law school, and students are worried that firms they're interviewing with will accuse them of sending pr0n which they haven't sent, and they want YOU to take care of it, and the best you can tell them is that it's probably an infection on the hard drive of one of their friends, or their mother, and that since the offending mail probably isn't originating from their account or going through the school's systems at all, there's no way you can help them.

Not that I know ANYTHING about this PERSONALLY. :(

While a serious indictment of spam, I have to say your editorial comments are hilarious. Two years ago I placed on-line orders for goods on behalf of my Mom, and I constantly get spam addressed to "Frances." It honestly tickles me.
