This is one of my favourite images of Brenna, which I call her Marilyn Monroe picture. I believe it was taken the summer of 1997 when she was three, at Poplar Bluff on Lake Erie.

Brenna was born on November 15, 1993. My wife took this picture a couple weeks later. I was 29.

During the summer of 1996 my wife was trying to restrict me from having unsupervised access to our daughters. Her scheme eventually failed, but in the meantime I hardly saw them. Brenna was two, and I missed her learning to talk. Somehow I managed to finagle a weekend in August, camping on Blueberry Island on our beloved Lake Fletcher. Marian, who was four, still remembers that weekend. We heard an owl in the night, and a raccoon raided our breakfast pack. Brenna was such a wonderful goof!

Another one at Poplar Bluff, summer of 1995.

She was a sunshine. Her personality has become a little more complicated of course, but she still has a sweet and humorous disposition.

Their early childhood was such a painful time for me that I had to move on. I don't feel much sadness looking at these pictures now. I am so pleased that my relationship with their mother has become civil and nothing seems to have clouded my relationship with the girls. I live very much in the present where my daughters are concerned.

It is a nice experience to start reconstructing some of our past without getting upset about it. A couple of years ago I couldn't have done so.

Oh yes, I do. It's interesting, really, seeing how Marian is more like me in some ways&mdashher mannerisms, and feature for feature our faces are more similar—and Brenna in others—while she has more of her mother's fine features, she has my colouring and just looks like me.

Something funny happened at the ROM. Marian and Brenna were standing with Sylvie and a woman exlaimed to her, "They look so much like you!" Sylvie and I just looked blankly at one another. She has typical French-Candian features and looks nothing like me or my daughters. Sometimes people imagine what they want to.

But you're not imagining anything. I have always related better to Brenna, too, but in the past 18 months things have improved greatly with Marian.

Beautiful pictures. I have to confess that in a couple of them it's hard for me to concentrate on Brenna -- I keep being distracted by the lovely man holding her.

I was a little confused about the date on the first and last pictures, but the clean-shaven look should have been a dead giveaway that the last one was 1995. As soon as my wife and I split the following winter, I grew a beard. My wife couldn't stand facial hair, but I frequently pushed the envelope with scruff.
