Kathleen and Wouter, March 1984
Oct. 8th, 2003 08:10 amLast night's entry inspired me to post this picture.

Kathleen Vanderhoeven was the closest friend I made in first year university. She was a Catholic, and the first person I remember who said anything personal to me about faith. We were sitting in the lounge late one evening in the winter of 1983.
"I think of faith as a swing," she said. "Sometimes you go up and you can see over the wall. Other times you can't."
After my "born again" experience in August, we drifted apart but stayed friends. One evening we went out with her friends Zena and Danielle. When we said goodnight, she kissed me and said, "Don't be a stranger."
After that she met Wouter van Straalen, a first-year student applying for Veterinary College, a big thing for biological science students at University of Guelph. Becoming a vet is almost as hard as becoming a medical doctor.
I took this picture of Kathleen and Wouter at College Royal Ball in March 1984.
The following September Wouter moved into the apartment with me and Scott Forfar. He had been accepted into pre-vets.
On September 15 Wouter and Kathleen biked to Toronto to see Pope John Paul II. After that they planned to go to the Metro Zoo. Wouter wouldn't ride after dark on a Saturday, so they only made a quick visit to his uncle in Oakville before heading home in daylight.
A few minutes after leaving his house, they were struck from behind by a drunk driver in a high speed chase. They both died at the scene.
