I'll be cooking Christmas dinner at my parents' house again this year. Here's the tentative menu.

And?

My inlaws serve their pate (Acadian version of tourtiere) plain, and it's always wigged me out. It needs veggies on the plate to make it not seem so bland and thunky (yes, thunky is a word!). May I suggest some sauteed spinach or other green, or maybe some carrots glazed in honey and brown sugar - something vaguely sweet to counter the meat and pastry.

For dessert, maybe some shortbread cookies - unless that hits your pastry overload button, then maybe something light such as poached pears?

Actually I was vague on that point because I intended to ask Mom to look after the accompaniments for the tourtiére, because we will arrive mid-afternoon on Christmas Eve. Turns out she was already planning a Caesar salad (one of Brenna's favourites), which will work fine. I find peach chutney goes nicely, but I didn't make any this summer so my chutney shelf is bare. Some baby carrots might be nice though. Hmm.

I think Mom had dessert worked out, too, but memory fails me.
