It's rainy and gloomy, more like the middle of April than beginning of February. And it's turning into a movie weekend.

Yesterday afternoon we watched The Blair Witch Project, both of us for the first time. Even Marian said it was creepy, although a little cheesy. It probably seemed far more innovative and original in 1999 than it does now. It's hard to believe how quickly entertainment has changed.

After dinner it was The Silence of the Lambs, first time for me, third for Marian. It's hard to form an opinion so soon, but a movie can't go wrong with two of my favourite actors, Foster and Hopkins, facing each other.

This morning we went to farmer's market, saw several choir members as usual, each bought a Swiss cheese philodendron, and picked up some vittles. At Thomas Video I bought Stepford Wives (2004) and The Life Aquatic, two for $20. For this afternoon we rented second season of Absolutely Fabulous, and Nineteen Eighty-Four.

The rain is turning to snow, but we brought home some beer for me and SoBe for Marian. Steaks are marinating in the fridge. We have nowhere else to go, and nothing to worry about, not today.

Silence of the Lambs didn't appeal to me until after a couple of viewings. When I saw it in the threater, I liked it all right, but probably wouldn't have watched it again. When it came to cable, John wanted to watch, so I did. Started to dig it more, but again wouldn't have watched it again. Then read a mini-review my brother wrote in an email, and decided to watch it again. That's when it started to become one of my favorites.

It struck me as a movie that would take well to being seen again. It is full of detail and subtlety. But one of Hopkins' lines I listened to four times, and still didn't understand it.

At the end of their first meeting when he called her back to his cell. I could not understand the last few words he said to her.

Hmmm... I'd have to look at it again. That's where he tells her about Hester Mofett, isn't it?

I've found it handy to turn the captions on if I can't understand what's being said. Almost all DVDs have captions these days.

Yes, the last sentence was another reference to the prisoner in the adjoining cell. Come to think of it, Marian managed to interpret it, but I can't remember it now.

foster and hopkins are both amazing in that. what did marian think of it? my sons are both able to watch scary things more easily than i can. i'm too literal-minded!

Marian doesn't scare easily (she didn't find The Ring particularly scary) and Brenna doesn't like scary movies, so I'm caught somewhere in the middle. I get very involved in movies of any kind, but generally enjoy the experience. I don't like blood and guts. The Blair Witch Project surprised me positively; it wasn't gruesome, all psychological.

I don't think Marian found The Silence of the Lambs scary (of course, she has seen it before), but I know she liked it well enough to want to see it again.

Ironically, it turned to snow this afternoon. In fact a couple of inches fell while we were watching AbFab.

I feel anxious throughout the watching of movies like these, but don't mind that. It cleanses me somewhat of the everyday brand of anxiety.

Ooooooh if you enjoyed "The Silence of the Lambs", you must see "Hannibal" now! "Red Dragon" is a hit or miss, I enjoyed it but not nearly as much as "Hannibal". I can't believe it was your first time for Silence! Then again, I'm obviously a huge fan...

My movie viewing is infrequent (partly because I watch no tv), and I'm skittish about scary ones. I was attracted to the actors here, but it's taken me a long time to get around to it (and a bargain in the DVD bin).
